Nurses in Fatigues
by Elizabeth H. Hay
This narrative is dedicated to the Nurses who have been assigned or attached to the 107th Evacuation Hospital (SM) - to all who are with us at this time and to those that have served with us throughout our period of activity. Each one has contributed a full measure individually and as your Chief Nurse I am deeply aware of your faith, loyalty and understanding during these difficult months. It has been a pleasure to have worked with you and without your wholehearted cooperation and effort the unit's success would not have been possible. Congratulations on your work already performed and my best wishes for your success in the future.
The incidents to follow are part of an unfinished story which covers the reactions of the nurses of this hospital, touching their work and environmental conditions. We have endeavored to bring out the personal experiences about the living conditions, health, adequacy of clothing and equipment, housing, messing, transportation, duty, improvisions and many other details that have made up our life in the ETO.
These pages cover the life of the nurses both at home during the activation period as well as near the front lines during combat. It touches the unglamorous life, the hardships and comforts as well as the recreation privileges with which we existed.
It was not my privilege to have worked with this unit from its early activation so there were many of the moves and items of interest with which I am not familiar; therefore, that the narrative may be complete, I have solicited the efforts of the following and to them I express my sincere appreciation for their contributions and cooperation in the preparation of this material:
1st Lt Madeline R. Milano (Pittsburgh, PA); 1st Lt Margaret M. Wright (Los Angeles, CA); 1st Lt Ingrid E. Flager (Baltimore, MD); 1st Lt Thelma L. Schug (Philadelphia, PA); 1st LT Ruth L. George (Riegelsville, PA); 1st LT Viola H. McEvoy (Hinton, WV); 1st Lt Martha S. Dougherty (Stewartsville, NJ); 1st Lt Helen R. Wilkie (Eastport, MD); 1st Lt Lilla Belle Snider (Akron, OH); 2nd Lt Mabel R. Stephanic (Ponca City, OK); and our Red Cross worker, Miss Laura F. Haight.
