The "Bulge"
Part Three - Carlsburg
Then the whole thing jarred into a sort of focus again for here we were stopping at a group of buildings, the St Joseph's School at Carlsburg, Belgium. Again the familiar pattern, patients and more patients all over the floors and hallways - gathering canteens from everyone around, moving from patient to ptient until the canteens were empty, finding Halazone tablets to put in the tap water - going from patient to patient with a cheerful word and a packet of morphine surrettes to relieve some of the pain. Surprisingly then four hours have passed and someone sends word that hot chow is ready down stairs! As ever, our Mess Section is functioning, turning out hot food and coffee even when it seems impossible - carrying on under terrific odds and handicaps yet always coming through with hot food when we need it. Over our food we are able to relax for a minute or two and talk over what has happened. During the conversation we learn that we have had to brings some 300 patients with us from the Chateau; the others were taken to the 130th General Hospital at Ciney, Belgium. The wounded that we had with us were being evacuated to the General Hospital, too, as fast send them out. The enlisted men still going back to the Chateau to pick up equipment that had to be left behind. Then the moments 'break ' is over - back to work again. As I went up the stairs I again saw the soldier from the TDs as always I asked the same question, but this time the answer was different! He had finally found his buddy and had gotten his name and address before the other soldier was evacuated to the General Hospital. Somehow or other things didn't seem quite as dark as they did before I saw him.
The next morning saw us start the job of cleaning, sorting and repacking the equipment, because everything had been thrown into the boxes or chests just any way. At noon came the familiar order, "Pack up - we're rolling again" - and so we did. This time it was to Sedan, France.
